Dear Cambridge Matters Readers:

Attached is my Cambridge Matters about new initiatives that have been developed during this past year to improve educational outcomes for our children. They are multi-faceted to the extent there is too much to write about in detail, but I hope that the attached gives you an idea of what is being done and what is planned and hoped for out of these efforts.

Please read and share with anyone you know that might be interested in these issues or is already doing something to support the youth of Dorchester County.

Thanks.

Cambridge Matters – August 24, 2021 – Masks or No Masks

CAMBRIDGE MATTERS
Judge Stephen Rideout (Ret.)
swrideout@aol.com

Dear Readers:

I have struggled in writing the attached to make myself as clear as possible while also trying to explain the role of the school board and the Superintendent in this issue. For them it is not and should not be about their own personal beliefs but rather about what decision does the most to protect the children, teachers, staff, and volunteers that work in the school and what decision provides the greatest opportunity to keep our schools open for in-school learning during the coming year.
It is not about the rights of parents; as there are, I am sure, parents on both sides of this issue.
I hope that this is helpful to you and to the school board and the Superintendent as this issue is decided.

August 21, 2021

Dear Readers:

Some months ago I wrote a Cambridge Matters regarding what I felt was the failure of the County Council to comply with several sections of the Maryland Open Meetings Act.
Several of the CAN Board members and I filed a complaint with the OMA Committee, and its decision is attached.
I thought that on a rainy Friday or over a possible rainy weekend, this might be interesting reading for you.

Dear Readers:

You may have a time when someone you know needs a resource here in the community. The Dorchester Department of Human Services has just updated their list of resources that I am attaching to this email. Please keep it handy for that time when someone you know is looking for help.

Also a group of us has started an organization called Moving Dorchester Forward. its aim is to help improve educational opportunities for people of all ages here. One of our members, Chris Wheedleton, has created a website called Partnership for Learning that has information about resources and programs in a number of different areas related to learning. The link to that website is https://thepfl.org/

Please take a look and sign up for the newsletter to keep up to date on what is being done in the community to improve educational outcomes for everyone here.

I hope that your summer is going well. More information to come on the Charter Change Initiative.

All the best.

Dear Readers:

Attached is my Cambridge Matters about a recent proposal that was scheduled to be heard by City Council this past Monday. I have received lots of questions and concerns about it and so have written the attached and also attached the proposal that was removed from the agenda on Monday for future consideration and possibly a work session.

I hope the attached help you to understand the issue and the solutions that I think are presently available under the current Charter to address them.

I welcome your thoughts. If you have views regarding the proposal or what I have offered, please let your Commissioner and the Mayor know or let all of them know.

– Steve
